1. THE PATTERN

The shape of a casting is prescribed by the pattern. Quality Castings will have a pattern made from your drawings if required. Remember to check that the drawing is the latest revision, and that the dimensions, tolerances and machining locations are clearly indicated. When the customer supplies the pattern, the dimensions of the casting will be as predicated by the pattern unless alterations are agreed to by the foundry and customers should be aware that different material may require different contraction allowances in the pattern. Patterns are generally of timber construction, however for one off or small run castings, expanded polystyrene patterns can be made at a lower cost.

2. ALLOY

The customer should specify the grade of material to be supplied. Quality Castings' Metallurgists can assist with advising a grade best suited for your application. It is recommended that only established standard grades should be specified. Factors to be considered include strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, operating temperature, etc. Quality Castings regularly produces more than 100 grades of iron and steel, and utilises advanced heat treatment facilities to develop the desired material properties.

3. SPECIFICATIONS

When orders are placed, of equal importance with the details relating to pattern number, grade of material, heat treatment etc, the purchaser should specify what is the minimum quality category and acceptance level. What makes the inclusion of this specification so necessary is that, by their nature, all castings will have to some degree, discontinuities. By the purchaser specifying the minimum quality category and acceptance level the foundry can plan, cost and finish the job to the correct standard first time-every time.

Quality Castings can advise on various test procedures and acceptance criteria. Unless otherwise specified castings will be supplied to visual inspection standard MSS SP55 - Quality Standard for Steel Castings for Valves, Flanges and Fittings and other piping components (Visual Method).

A complete range of quality control procedures can be employed to ensure adherence to the highest standards and specifications. Optional testing procedures include Certificates of the Chemical Analysis, Tensile test certificates, Bend Tests, Impact tests, Magnetic Particle tests, Dye Penetrant testing, Ultrasonic testing and Radiography. All tests are performed to a specified standard, and NATA certification if available.
